Walter Hagen (1892–1969)

The Americans had arrived, and Hagen wafted a breath of bracing air into the stuffy world of British golf. A consummate player (he won the British Open four times, the US Open twice and 11 majors in all), he was also an assertive character who took nonsense from no-one and who literally added colour to the course with his bright clothing, plus-fours and two-toned shoes.

‘I never wanted to be a millionaire,’ he once said, ‘just to live like one’ – but his many lucrative exhibition matches and product endorsements made him the first sporting millionaire in any case. As for living like one, he spent his fortune conspicuously and travelled with suitcases stuffed with cash.
